Niles was both thrilled and frustrated at the same time. He'd received word only a few days in advance that the vice president himself would be coming to Defiance. That was hardly enough time to prepare. And no one seemed to know the purpose of the visit. It couldn't be anything like a random inspection. This was too high level. There was no political reason, no election coming up.
But in the end, they got things more or less in order. Niles put Berlin to the task of keeping the Tarrs busy to ensure neither of them caused trouble. The rest of the soldiers were there to greet the convoy when it arrived. Niles himself wasn't there. He waited it his office. Pacing. Regardless of what this was for, this could make his career. A single word from the Vice President could transform this entire town. Could send Niles elsewhere. It could elevate or devastate him. He poured himself a glass of scotch and downed it to calm his nerves.
But why was he here?
The door to his office opened and one of the soldiers poked his head in. "He's here," the young man announced.
Niles stood in the middle of the room, smoothing down the front of his jacket. Ensuring everything was in order. That not so much as a hair was out of place. Hands at his sides, standing at proper attention. Proving he was still a well trained solider. He could not let even the slightest hint slip. If Vice President Baltar caught wind of Niles' issues, he was done for.
The door swung open and he braced himself, expecting an entire entourage.
